How to Connect Sony WH1000-XM4 to 2 Devices.
One of the most striking features of the Sony WH1000-XM4 is the ability to pair with two devices at the same time. For example, let’s say your XM4 is connected to your PC and phone and you receive an incoming call. The call will pause everything you are watching on your PC and switch the sound to the phone, after the call it will switch the sound back to the PC and resume what was paused earlier. But it turns out that this feature is not enabled by default. Moreover, the ability to do so is hidden deep in the setting. Don’t worry, here’s a step-by-step guide to pairing the XM4 with two devices.
Connect Sony WH1000-XM4 to two devices
The process of connecting two devices to the Sony XM4 is a bit long, but much easier. To give you an idea of what we’re going through.
- Connect XM4 to 1st device.
- Install and open the Sony Headphones Connect app.
- Turn on Connect to 2 devices at the same time.
- Put the headphones in pairing mode.
- Connect the XM4 to the second device.
In my case, I am using an Android device and a Windows laptop. First, we will connect the WH1000-XM4 to an Android device. Sony XM4 comes with GFP (Google Fast Pair). So, the moment you turn on the headphones and bring them to your Android device, a pop-up window will appear on Android asking you to connect the headphones.
After connecting the headphones to the Android device, we need to connect them to the Sony Headphones Connect app. To do this, download and install the Sony Headphones Connect app on your first Android phone.
Download Sony Headphones Connect App (Android | iOS)
Once you’ve installed the app, open it, select your country and read the Terms of Service. Next, you will be prompted to name and register the Sony WH1000-XM4. Just click OK. Further steps are self-explanatory, just click “NEXT” and “LATER” where possible.
After registering the headphones in the app, go to the System tab and turn on the Connect to 2 devices simultaneously switch. This will allow your headphones to connect to 2 devices at the same time.
Now go back to the “Status” tab, you will see the name of the currently connected device in the “Device currently connected” tab. To connect to the second device, click on the option. On the Manage Connected Device page, click the + sign in the lower right corner of the page.
Then your Sony WH1000-XM4 will switch to pairing mode. When you hear the headphone prompt, connect it to the second device. In my case, this is a Windows 10 laptop.
You can see both connected devices in the Sony Headphones app. This makes it easy to manage Bluetooth connections from one device in the app.
The Bluetooth addresses of the device are saved in the built-in memory of the headphones. It will automatically connect to both devices even if you uninstall the app.
The XM4 can easily switch between both connected devices. For example, if you are playing a video on your Windows 10 laptop and receive a call on your smartphone, the XM4 will pause the video on Windows 10 and switch to your Android device. Once you disconnect the call, media playback resumes in Windows 10 and the XM4 returns to your laptop. The only downside to connecting to 2 devices is the loss of Hi-Fi Bluetooth audio. Once you enable the Connect to 2 Devices Simultaneously option, the Sony WH1000-XM4 will switch to the AAC codec from the Hi-Fi LDAC codec.
