How to Use Clownfish as Real Time Voice Changer for Discord and Fortnite.
When you’re playing multiplayer games like PUBG or Fortnite, chatting on the public Discord server, or spending time on Skype, changing your voice can come in handy. Whether it’s for added security and anonymity, or just for a prank, changing your voice can make you sound like a completely different person, or even a robot or alien.

Best Real Time Voice Changer
Windows has some good voice changer solutions. Voicemod comes to mind immediately. There are other premium solutions like AV Voice Changer out there, but license cost can be a limiting factor. We ended up using Clownfish for this tutorial for several reasons.
For starters, while Voicemod is technically free to use, the free version has a few limitations. You get access to six random voices that change daily. If you have a consistent voice that you associate with a certain online character, this makes the free version of Voicemod useless. Another big disadvantage of Voicemod is that it lacks system-wide integration. When you install Voicemod, it creates a virtual input device, which you then need to manually select in the applications you use it for. While Voicemod itself claims to be compatible with many programs using the microphone, from Skype to Discord to Fortnite, software input devices don’t always work well with every program.
Clownfish, by contrast, gives you a system-wide voice change. Once installed and configured, all audio input is routed through Clownfish before being passed to your programs. Windows does not treat it as a separate device, which makes configuration much easier. Since it is global, you just need to configure Clownfish once and it will work with all your software. Although Clownfish has a more limited library of voice options compared to Voicemod, it is completely free, so there are no freemium restrictions like Voicemod does.
AV Voice Changer is a very reliable tool that gives you more complete control over voice modulation than Clownfish or Voicemod. At $ 99.99, however, it is exclusively for professionals, not gamers looking to change the sounds of their chat voice.

Before we start
Before setting up Clownfish for Discord, Skype, or games like Fortnite, there are a few things you need to have on hand. On the other hand, since Clownfish works at the system level, you only need to install and configure it once to work with all applications using your microphone. Here’s all you need:
- A 32-bit or 64-bit Windows PC running Windows Vista or later.
- A USB or 3.5mm microphone is connected to the computer.
- A copy of Clownfish that you can download from the link below.
Step 1. You will need to download and install the Clownfish program. You can get Clownfish here for Windows. Get the 64-bit version if you have 64-bit Windows. Otherwise, get the 32 bit version. Follow the standard installation procedures here.
To find out if you are using Windows 10 32-bit or 64-bit, open the Settings app by pressing the Windows button, find Settings and press Enter. Then go to System About. On the right, find the “System Type” entry. It will show you a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system.
Step 2. After installing Clownfish, launch the application and it will appear on the taskbar. Let’s see how to set up Clownfish to change your voice in Fortnite, Skype, Discord, and more.
Step 3. Right-click the Clownfish icon in the system tray, then select the Customize option.
From here you want to click on the setup next to the microphone list. It should show up as “Microphone”. Choosing an installation will configure Clownfish to work with your microphone.
Step number 3a. If you have multiple audio devices displayed, you should first configure the active microphone. To do this, follow these steps before clicking the Install button above.
Step number 3b. Enter “control panel” at the beginning of your search and click on it.
Step number 3c. Click Hardware and Sound.
Step # 3d. Click Sound.
Step number 3d. Click the Recording tab.
Step # 3f. Right click on the microphone and select Set as default device. If this is already the default device, this will be discussed below. If it says “default communication device”, you still need to right-click and set it as default device.
Step # 4. Now you are ready to install Clownfish, go to step 3 above to do so.
Once you have configured the Clownfish microphone. Right-click the Clownfish icon in the system tray again. Now click Hear Microphone. This will let you hear what the voice changer is doing.
Step # 5. Right-click the icon in the taskbar, then select Install Voice Changer. There might be a blue check mark next to it, but that’s just a design flaw.
Click on it and you will see the Clownfish voice changer menu. You can choose any of the effects to enable them. If you want to blend the effects, click the Clownfish icon shown and then the right arrow next to it. You can choose the effects for mixing. You can also use the interface to customize your presets in terms of pitch and microphone sensitivity.
Step 6. That’s all. Since Clownfish is installed as a system-wide tool, all applications using your microphone will rely on Clownfish input. In apps like Discord, you don’t have to do anything special. If you check the input devices, your Clownfish-enabled microphone will be displayed as “default”, as shown below.
If you want to disable Clownfish, just right-click the icon in the taskbar and select Disable.
What about post-installation? We did not encounter any issues while uninstalling Clownfish, but some users reported driver conflicts. The general safety rules for third-party software apply here: you install a Windows restore point before installing Clownfish, and after that you must perform a clean uninstall. You can check out some of these apps here for how to do a complete removal .
If you’ve followed these steps, you should have Clownfish running. Any software you need voice modulation support will work out of the box thanks to Clownfish’s system-wide integration. After you’re done making fun of people with someone else’s voice in Fortnite, you might want to learn about how to best use your microphone, such as how to use some great sound recording software.
